Educational Philosophy
My philosophy of education has dramatically changed from the 13 years ago when I first became a teacher. Back then I was focused on what I wanted the students to do and learn rather than allow them to explore and figure out their own path to learning. It was more of an idealism approach to education where I was the center or source of everything for the student. As time progressed I realized that this was not the direction I wanted to continue with teaching students. I often became frustrated when students could not problem-solve, create their own ideas for projects, and effectively lead in discussions and class projects. I was finding myself to be totally exhausted and students were not receiving the best educational experience. So half-way through my teaching career I begin to change the atmosphere in my class form one that was teacher centered to one that is now student centered. This connects closely with the philosophy of Constructivism. I have relinquished some control and have given my students the opportunity to take ownership of their classroom. This has proven to be very productive as students learn to effectively problem-solve through real life experiences and develop leaderships skills that help them to connect to the idea that adulthood with its major responsibilities are quickly approaching. To serve as a facilitator in my classes has helped me to become a better teacher that allows room for trial and error and growth and maturity.
Technology has dramatically improved since my role has changed. Students have asked me for permission to incorporate different programs and technological equipment to presentations and performances which have not only taught other students but me as well. This reminds me of what my favorite teachers were and these were the one that allow me to take ownership and pride in the class being taken without the need to control everything. It was their willingness to be a continual learner that sparked reciprocal learning environment. This is what my idea of education now is one that is reciprocal. Technology helps to reciprocate the learning cycle being that learning is not a one-sided thing. Students as well as teachers are constantly learning and technology is the key to this cycle. I enjoy the opportunity to pour into individuals the idea that they can and are gifted to do more. Technology provides the resources that offer great avenues for figuring out what goals are necessary to unlock their talents and gifts. When I think over the teachers that I had that did offer the opportunity for growth I realized that I must maintain a balance in my teaching that would offer an environment for teaching and autonomy as well for all students. The technology keeps the balance.
What a nice First Blog. I totally agree with your new Educational Philosophy.
